Please join us at our upcoming FREE public educational sea turtle nest evaluation. Every summer during July and August, Coastal Connections, Inc, in partnership with Indian River County, get to provide a one of a kind interactive educational opportunity on the beach where you can learn more about our SUPER special sea turtles, and maybe even watch one get rescued and released into the ocean. These events occur three days after a nest hatches so we apologize for the short notice, but this is ane vent you won't want to miss!
The summertime gets pretty hot, so even though these events will be in the morning, please bring water and sunscreen (and possibly bug spray).
When?
July 10, 2019
8:00 AM EDT - 9:00 AM EDT
Where?
Sexton Plaza
1006 Beachland Blvd.
Vero Beach, FL 32963
Welcome and Educational Presentation
Quintin Bergman or Sydney Brewer
We will start off with a brief welcome as people begin to crowd around the hatched nest. Then the IRC Sea Turtle Coordinator or Summer Intern will give a short educational presentation about our local sea turtles and how you can protect them through everyday actions.
Nest Excavation and Evaluation
Turtle Team Leads
During the presentation, you will get to watch our team leaders excavate and evaluate the hatched nest and look for straggler hatchlings that may have gotten stuck and left behind by their siblings. Contents of the nests will be shown around the circle after the evaluation is complete.
Release of Live Hatchlings*
The last part of the nest to be shown around the circle will be any straggler hatchlings found within the nest cavity. If a hatchling is found it will be immediately released after the excavation is complete. Please note, this is not guaranteed.
*Hatchlings found in a nest are considered weaker stragglers that did not hatch with their brothers and sisters. An average of 1/2 of the nests we excavate do not have live hatchlings still inside. Rescuing a hatchling is NOT guaranteed.
We will have an educational tent set up at the beach access. We will have free giveaways, educational information, volunteer sign up and a survey we would love for you to fill out for us. CCinc will also have a few of their reusable bags available for donation and a raffle! We encourage you to visit the CCins store inside Sea Turtle Real Estate after the Turtle Dig is over or consider making a donation so we can continue our local conservation efforts.
