The Countdown Begins for Hatchlings Sea turtle nesting season is finally here! Soon our beaches will be filled with thousands of nests from female sea turtles that make their annual trip to the sand. If you visit our beaches keep your eyes out for fresh turtle tracks. If you happen to see a nesting turtle please remember to let nature take its course and watch from a distance, we don't want to scare off these amazing creatures. Also, make sure to keep your eyes out for our public Turtle Digs starting in July. We will post an announcement on our Facebook page, every time we have a nest hatch that will be a part of a public nest excavation. If you have never seen a public Turtle Dig, this summer can be your chance for an amazing experience. Though our conservation goal is for all of the hatchlings to make it to the big blue ocean on their own, there are a few times that stragglers are left behind by their brothers and sisters. If any hatchlings are found during the nest evaluation, we will try to release them that day into the ocean. Another great way to experience something unique is to participate in our Adopt-A-Nest program. Every nest adoption is unique and comes with a personalized certificate, nest success information and the opportunity to follow this nest through its incubation. This is a one of a kind gift for yourself or a loved one and is a wonderful way to help protect and conserve sea turtles in Vero Beach, FL. There are a limited number of nests up for adoption, so get yours today! *All hatchling and turtle releases must be done in compliance with FWC's Marine Turtle Handbook. Permit #259 | |
